His love’s too wondrous to behold
A love that set me free
A love that led my Saviour to
His death at Calvary
Remember how they came to Him
With swords and staves that night
When in Gethsemane He prayed
These men in all their might
Betrayal by a Judas kiss
Bound like a common thief
They mocked and jeered and spat on Him
The silence of His grief
The crown made of Jerusalem thorns
Pressed deep into His flesh
His beard plucked out by sinful hands
The agony of His death
The thirty-nine stripes He received
His very bones laid bare
The awful thirst, His mouth so dry
The soldiers didn’t care
They stripped Him naked, shared His clothes
Cast lots to win His cloak
His face unrecognizable
What demons were evoked
Nailed to the cross, nails touching nerves
Excruciating pain
And yet He uttered no reproach
But bore our hurt and shame
Became our sin to set us free
And died that we might live
And even with His dying breath
Cried; Father, please forgive
Forgive them, for they know not what they do
He cried that day
And nature mourned while people laughed
The bright sun hid away
The Earth grew dark, rocks tore and fell
Man ran and hid away
The dead walked through Jerusalem
For Jesus died that day
The curtain in the temple rent
The holy place in sight
No longer was the glory there
They’d killed God’s perfect light
A sword was pierced into His side
And blood and water flowed
Sign of a broken hearted death
Such wondrous love bestowed
If I could give all that I have
It never could atone
For that which Jesus gave that day
To bring this lost sheep home
